Gas vs. Electric Hot Water Systems
Electric:
Shorter Life Span
Tankless gas hot water systems have a lifespan of up to 20 years whereas electric storage hot water systems will only last up to 10 – 12 years.
Gas:
Greater Upfront Cost
Tankless gas hot water systems can cost up to 50% more than an electric hot water system depending on the size.
Electric:
Larger Storage Needed
Electric storage hot water systems require a tank and a larger installation area whereas tankless gas hot water systems are much smaller and can be attached to a wall taking up much less space.
Gas:
Cheaper Running Costs
Though gas hot water systems have a higher upfront cost, they are much cheaper to run than electric storage hot water systems. On average, after the first year, a gas hot water system will have already made up for the higher upfront cost.
Electric:
Limited Supply of Hot Water
Tankless gas hot water systems heat water whenever it is needed whereas storage electric hot water systems heat a tank full of water. Once that water has been used up a new tank will need to be heated before you can use your hot water again.
